Understanding the Somatic Approach
A Structured Approach to Deep Healing
Unlike traditional talking therapies that focus primarily on analysing thoughts, the somatic approach begins with the body (‘soma’).
When you experience trauma or chronic stress, your nervous system can become overwhelmed, trapping that survival energy inside your physical body. This often manifests as chronic tension, fatigue, anxiety, or emotional numbness.Through gentle body awareness in a safe environment, you track these physical sensations without digging into painful past events all at once.
By listening to your body's cues, you safely release trapped stress, allowing your nervous system to return to its natural, regulated state of calm, clarity, and connection.
Core Pillars of the Somatic Approach
Interoception: Tracking where emotions live physically in the body.
Resourcing: Establishing safety before addressing painful memories.
Titration: Processing stress in tiny, manageable pieces.
Pendulation: Moving awareness between tension and ease.
Discharge: Releasing trapped energy via sighs, shivering, or movement.
What is Trauma?
Trauma is any experience, from major life-altering events, to ongoing everyday stressors that overwhelms your nervous system and outpaces your ability to cope.
Big "T" Trauma: Sudden, life-shattering events like a serious accident, natural disaster, or unexpected loss.
Little "t" Trauma: Ongoing, chronic experiences such as relationship instability, emotional neglect, or prolonged financial stress.
Both types are entirely valid. To survive them, our natural instinct is to adapt by disconnecting from our bodies and falling into overthinking loops. While this protects us in the moment, it can leave us feeling deeply disconnected long after the threat has passed.
How I Work
As a trauma-informed therapist, my work begins by building a safe, secure relationship with you to help regulate your nervous system. Creating physical safety allows your brain to rest, process, and open the door to lasting healing.
Holistic Lens: I see your unique coping strategies not as flaws to fix, but as brilliant, resourceful ways your system learned to protect you.
Collaborative Pacing: We work gently together, letting your nervous system guide the pace so you always feel stable, grounded, and supported.
Connection-Centered: Authentic human connection heals. I offer a steady, respectful, and empowering space for your journey back to wholeness.
Understanding Nervous System Healing
The nervous system guides how we feel, process thoughts, and connect with others. When life becomes overwhelming, we can easily find ourselves feeling anxious, disconnected, or entirely stuck. Somatic therapy helps you restore balance by bridging the gap between mind and body, allowing your system to gently process what words alone cannot express.
Regulated: Life feels steady, grounded, and manageable.
Dysregulated: Everyday life can feel like a constant uphill battle.
At Soul Soma Therapy, we help you reconnect with your body’s innate wisdom. By learning to release stored stress and overwhelm, you can finally feel safe within your own skin again.
The Autonomic Nervous System: Your Control Centre
Think of your autonomic nervous system as your body's automated control centre. It runs constantly in the background, managing your heartbeat and digestion without you ever thinking about it.
To keep you alive, healthy, and safe, this system relies on a delicate balance between two main branches:
The Sympathetic System (The Accelerator): Your stress response. When you face pressure or danger, it steps on the gas, increasing your heart rate and flooding your body with adrenaline to meet the challenge.
The Parasympathetic System (The Brake): Your rest, recovery, and repair system. It steps on the brake to slow your heart rate, relax your muscles, and signal that it is safe to digest food and rest.
The Problem with Modern Overwhelm
In a balanced system, the accelerator and brake work beautifully together. You meet a challenge, then you recover. However, constant modern stressors mean many of us live with our foot permanently glued to the accelerator. Because the parasympathetic brake never gets a chance to do its job, this lack of deep rest eventually leads to chronic exhaustion, anxiety, and physical illness.
Living with a permanently activated sympathetic nervous system shows up clearly in your daily life. You might notice:
Racing thoughts and a mind that won't turn off.
Shallow breathing or a tight, heavy chest.
Chronic tension, especially in your jaw, neck, or shoulders.
Digestive issues like bloating, cramping, or acid reflux.
Sleep disruption, including difficulty falling asleep or waking up exhausted.
Constant alertness, feeling easily startled or emotionally on edge.
How Somatic Therapy Helps You Reset
Traditional talking therapies often attempt to reason with an anxious mind, but you cannot logic your way out of a physiological survival response.
At Soul Soma Therapy, we work directly with the body to gently lift your foot off the accelerator. By teaching your nervous system how to safely engage its natural brake, we help you transition out of chronic survival mode and back into a genuine, lasting state of rest, recovery, and balance.
